Developing back pain is the perfect way to ruin a good night’s sleep. But we live in a world that believes in having choices. There’s plenty of products on the market that can help you sleep better even with back pain. Some of them are expensive such as the specially designed mattresses, but others are well within reach of most budgets.

Even if you can’t afford one of the specialty mattresses, you can make sure you buy a sturdy mattress that doesn’t collapse with use. Also, you should use pillows that maintain their support. The pillow should keep your neck and head in line with your spine. When your pillows get old and flat it’s time to buy new pillows. They often advertise adjustable bed frames on television. These frames let you raise your legs or head to relieve pressure on the spine. If you’re having trouble sleeping due to back pain, check your bed and see if you need to replace what you’re sleeping on.

Deciding whether to have back surgery can be a major decision. Everyone’s heard the war stories about surgeries gone wrong or surgeries that don’t result in less back pain. But the fact is that surgery is probably one of the best choices for permanent pain reduction when it’s clear what is causing the pain. You don’t ever have to feel forced to choose surgery unless there’s a chance of paralysis if you don’t have it. In that case, I can’t imagine choosing to avoid surgery.

The good news is that by the time you decide to have surgery, you’ve probably been through a complete battery of tests and have tried numerous other approaches to relieving your back pain. That means surgery has become the last alternative and appears to be the one that will work in your situation. I highly advise you to get a second opinion though no matter how good you think your doctor may be. The reason is because the cause of back pain can be so elusive. You certainly want to avoid surgery if it seems more like a guesswork solution.

Chiropractic treatment at one time was used by very few people because it was a new procedure and many didn't believe in it. Insurance companies wouldn't pay for chiropractic treatment because they didn't feel it was a medical treatment by a "real doctor". Through recent years, a lot of this has changed, including many insurance companies now paying for chiropractic treatment of back pain.

Most people with back pain will try their own remedies first, including ice packs, heating pads, rest, pain relievers, etc. When this doesn't work, most of the back pain sufferers will then see their doctor to see what more can be done to relieve the back pain. The doctor will not usually recommend chiropractic treatment of back pain until he's tried a few methods of treatment and they don't work. In some cases, the doctor does not ever recommend a chiropractor, whereas in certain back pain cases, they will suggest you seeing if a chiropractor can help.

Many individuals may suffer recurring back problems every time they participate in certain activities. In cases such as this, they often bypass seeing their regular doctor and go directly to a chiropractor. Chiropractic treatment of back pain works very successfully for many back pain sufferers, and they wouldn't dream of going anywhere else for their back pains.

The chiropractic treatment of back pain consists of the manual manipulation of your back to get it in the position and condition it should be normally. You may have heard friends say they were going to see their chiropractor to get a back "adjustment". This adjustment is the common chiropractic treatment of back pain, the manipulation that is used on the vertebrae that are not moving in the normal way. The adjustment of the vertebrae will give more range of motion, better nerve conditions and help relieve the pain.

The adjustment consists of a quick, high velocity, short lever arm thrust right to the vertebra. This is usually comes with a release of gas, such as oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide when the joint is cracking. It is important to be relaxed and not tense when the chiropractor is doing the adjustments or there may be more pain and discomfort. In this case, the chiropractor may have to apply ice to the back, give the patient some rest and try electrical stimulation before attempting to make the adjustments again.

Chiropractic treatment of back pain is becoming very common with people that suffer from upper and lower back pain. Most individuals do not go to the chiropractor for just one visit. They usually make return visits every time their back begins to bother them again. This is the main reason why many people will not see a chiropractor. They believe the chiropractor is "adjusting" the symptoms temporarily, but not fixing the cause.

A common medication prescription given for back pain is for muscle relaxants. Muscle relaxants work well when your muscles are so tense they cause back pain. What I didn’t realize is that science doesn’t know for sure how muscle relaxants work on the muscles. They just know they can calm your nerves and make your brain send nice messages to your muscles instead of tense messages.

The problem with muscle relaxants is they can be addicting if you take them too long. In essence they make you feel good and who doesn’t like feeling good? If your back pain has been due to tense muscles causing muscle spasms, the muscle relaxants can help you learn to relax long enough for the muscles to calm down. But you shouldn’t take this medication for longer than 2 or 3 weeks. They don’t “cure” anything and you should learn to relax without drugs. Muscle relaxants are just a way to get some temporary relief.

I have a theory that high heels were invented to keep women subjugated. You can’t run in them and sometimes it seems you can barely walk in them. But worse of all they can actually throw your spine out of alignment. They cause an unnatural curve of the spine and can put pressure on the back muscles. Eventually, back pain will begin and it often starts in the neck. I’ve known women who found freedom from back pain within a couple of weeks after ditching the high heels.

Your shoes can make a big difference to the health of your back. Your body is a system and everything is connected. Your shoes should provide good support for the arches and the toe area should not squeeze your toes. Your shoes should be stable too. High heels can be very unstable and cause the muscles in your lower back to work hard to keep you balanced. If you wear high heels and experience back pain, I suggest you consider wearing a lower heel for a while to find out if your neck or back pain disappears.

A large percent of the population suffers from back pain, especially lower back pain. Many people find themselves unable to function in their daily routine, often missing time from work, due to lower back pain. Fortunately, lower back pain is usually not serious, at least if you receive lower back pain treatment right away.

Usually lower back pain is caused from a strain or sprain in some part of the lower back. Very seldom will lower back pain result in surgery. There are, of course, some exceptions such as a ruptured disc or serious injury from a bad accident. In serious cases like this, there will be more than just the basic lower back pain treatment.

When you first begin to feel the pain in your lower back, it is important to use ice to prevent swelling. It shouldn't be used all day long, however. It should be used for about 15 minutes every few hours throughout the day. This should be the first lower back pain treatment you use for your lower back pain. Although many prefer to use heat because it feels better, it's not advisable to use heat in the beginning of the pain as this can sometimes make the pain last longer. After the first day or two, you can switch to heat or alternate between the two. Get as much rest as you can the first day or two. You many want to take some simple pain relievers such as ibuprofen, acetaminophen, etc. Tylenol, Motrin or Advil have been known to be quite effective as a noninvasive lower back pain treatment.

After the first couple of days, you should try to get back to your normal routine as much as possible, even if you are still having pain in your back. Medical studies now indicate that too much bed rest can actually aggravate lower back pain and make it last longer. Exercise is an important part of lower back pain treatment. This is not to say you should go out biking or jogging if you're still in pain, but simple walking and doing your normal activities will help your back get back in shape quicker.

If the pain hasn't lessened in a couple of weeks, it's time to see a physician. A physician will be able to look at your back with a trained eye and possibly take X-rays to see if any damage has occurred that you're unaware of. In most cases, he will tell you to do what you've been doing (ice, heat, rest, exercise, etc.) and if that doesn't help, he'll probably send you to see a physical therapist. Physical therapy is a very common lower back pain treatment. Therapists specialize in every part of your back and how it should and shouldn't look and perform. Their lower back pain treatment may consist of massage, exercises, ultrasound or electrical nerve stimulation.

In most of the cases with lower back pain, these treatments help the patient. In the occurrence that they don't, you may have something more serious and will need more tests from your doctor. Your physical therapist will give you may tips on how to prevent further lower back pain problems by taking care of your back.

The erector spinae are back muscles that run along each side of the spinal column. When you injure this muscle, it can really hurt. The best way to control the pain is through exercises that target these muscles. Too many people forget all about toning up their back muscles when they exercise. They work their arms, legs and abdomens but leave the poor back out of the picture.

The best exercises I’ve found for the back include the barbell bent row, the deadlift, the pelvic lift, the leg lift buttock tightener and the double leg lifts. Though some of these exercises sound like they’re meant for bodybuilders or weightlifters, they are perfect for everyone. You don’t have to use a heavy weight. In fact, you can use a phone book if you want. The main point is you need to make sure you include your back in a regular exercise routine if you want to avoid unnecessary sprains, pulls and tears.

A bulging disc is when the spongy material between vertebrae extends out. It’s usually caused by too much pressure that’s been put on the spine causing excessive compression. There are lots of nerves that run out from the disc, so when the disc bulges near one of the nerves, pain develops. The pain isn’t necessarily in the back though. The pain can run down the nerves and end up making your legs or even your arms hurt.

The fact is though, you can have a herniated disc and not have any pain. You can actually have a bulging disc that doesn’t affect a nerve and so there’s no pain. The indications you have a back problem include other things like tingling and numbness in the legs. So don’t think you have to have pain when you have a bulging or herniated disc.

Back pains are a condition that affects millions of people each year as well as costing many lost hours and days from work. In addition, millions of dollars are being spent every day on medical care and treatment for back pain sufferers as well as health care costs. With the rising costs of health care each year, more people are choosing self-treatment for back pain in their lives. This is especially the case for people that have recurring back pains and can't afford repeated doctor visits.

Doctors will usually discourage self treatment for back pain because the pain may be the start of a serious condition in the back. There are many cases where back pain starts as a simple "back ache", but because it is not properly treated in its early stages, it turns to more serious chronic back pains, which take time and money to cure. Self-treatment for back pain is the solution, however, to individuals that know why their back is bothering them because it happens often enough when they are participating in a specific activity.

It is important at the onset of back pain to get rest to see if that makes a difference. If your back pain is localized like upper back or lower back, doctors would recommend ice to prevent swelling. Ice should be put on the back for 5 to 15 minutes every few hours for the first day or two. There are many good over-the-counter medications to help with the pain in the early stages as well as anti-inflammatory drugs. In any cases of back pain, these are always the first steps that should be taken for self-treatment of back pain. Unless you have visible damage to your back requiring surgery, these are the steps a doctor will you take for relief of your back pain.

After the first few days, if the pain is still present, heat is often helpful such as a heating pad, hot water bottle or a warm bath. Many people find soaking in a hot oil bath with Essential oils to be very relaxing on the back. This is very helpful as self-treatment of back pain.

Although rest is important for back pain in the first day, medical research has shown that complete bed rest will often make the pain worse and last longer. After the first couple of days, it's important to try to get back to your normal routine as quickly as possible. Self-treatment of back pain involves exercise to keep the back muscles strong to avoid more injury.

There are also many supplements that are very good for relieving back pain as well as helping to keep your back muscles strong. Some of these supplements are Vitamin D, Vitamin B-12, magnesium, fish oil supplements and many more can be found in a health store.

Be advised that if your back pain doesn't get better in a certain amount of time with the use of self-treatment of back pain, you should see a doctor.
